We are trying to better understand the business and policy aspects of breeding maize for organic farmers. Our current research efforts focus on:
- Evaluating potential policy barriers to organic maize breeding including intellectual property rights and restrictions on advanced breeding techniques.
- Analyzing market issues in maize breeding including farmer access to high quality organic seed and use of non-organic seed in certified organic production.
- Exploring business structures to integrate public breeding programs and participatory farmer networks into the commercial aspects of maize breeding.
